DANCE IN THE PARK: Classes for 1st grade through high school! Join us for a joyful outdoor dance experience!

Our families have asked for outdoor classes this fall and we are THRILLED to announce dance classes in the park near Maplewood Village! LJD School is partnering with Maplewood Community Services to offer fun dance classes at the bottom of the hill in Memorial Park (where the Maplewoodstock stage usually is) On  fall Thursday afternoons. Social distancing and masks are required to be sure everyone stays safe.

The class will be a fun mix of dance styles as we adapt to dancing on the lawn. A contemporary warm-up, a ballet and alignment section followed by patterns combining modern, jazz and using our ballet as a base! Kids will add their own improvised shapes and patterns. All to a vibrant mix of music and led by LJD Principal dancers Laura and Katie.

Dancers need to wear masks, sneakers and NON- baggy dance wear, such as leotards and leggings, or fitted T shirts and shorts.

If you are at the station you cross the street going toward to park and walk down the hill to the bottom, flat area. This area can be accessed from Dunnell and Oakview Rd as it leads to the train station as well.

2 Zoom Safe at Home classes: With the creative use of Zoom technology, we can offer an individuated curriculum by using breakout rooms and placing students in groups as needed to work on technical skills or choreography projects. Students can begin to choreograph dances with more sophisticated components, including canons, spatial design, exits and entrances, and counterpoint. We will make sure that students have time to connect with one another and share their work, as we know this is an important part of virtual instruction to find a warm and nurturing connection.

Ballet II and III technique classes will be taught as separate levels although they occur at the same time. The classes build on the ballet curriculum of Ballet I and II. The classes expand the range of classical ballet steps worked on as well as to emphasize the crucial importance of correct alignment. Students will begin class with a ballet barre, followed by center work including adagio, pirouettes or preparations for pirouettes, and allegro sections. These classes will help students utilize different ballet steps in combinations, while focusing on musicality and movement quality, and while allowing beginners to participate. With the assistance of Zoom technology, we can offer an individuated curriculum by using breakout rooms and placing students in groups as needed to work on technical skills or choreography projects. At this age, students can begin to choreograph dances with more sophisticated components, including canons, spatial design, exits and entrances, and counterpoint. We will make sure that students have time to connect with one another and share their work, as we know this is an important part of virtual instruction to find a warm and nurturing connection.
